Distilling: Happy Birthday Filey Bay First Release
It’s hard to believe six years have passed since we launched Filey Bay First Release, Yorkshire’s first-ever single malt.
On that day, we had a queue right around the corner of the distillery. At the same time, the other half of our team was pouring samples at the 2019 York Whisky Festival.
Light, fruity, and matured in ex-bourbon casks, First Release set the tone for our whisky style. It made waves and sold out almost immediately. Filey Bay Second Release followed in November 2019, and our Moscatel Finish arrived in March 2020 (just as the world shut down).
The legacy continues. Today, Filey Bay Flagship is available in over 12 different countries.
The First Release was a combination of our pot and column distillates. We used a selection of just 16 first-fill bourbon casks, laid down in 2016, which added a subtle sherry influence. These were gently married together here at the distillery, yielding just 6000 bottles.
